Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari’s party may be wracked by defections and his battles against corruption and an Islamist rebellion under fire, but he has one crucial advantage in securing re-election: incumbency.

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja was yesterday asked to declare the seat of Senator Godswill Akpabio at the Senate vacant and order the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a byelection within 90 days into the vacant seat. That was even as another an FCT High Court sitting in Bwari restrained Senate President Bukola Saraki from declaring Akpabio’s seat vacant.

Unakalamba woos Imo people to support Madumere

A frontline aspirant to represent Mbaitoli-Ikeduru in the House of Representatives, National Assembly, Chief Ambrose Unakalamba, has called on the people of Imo State to support  Prince Eze Madumere, the present deputy governor of Imo State, to succeed the incumbent governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, in 2019.

  He described the deputy governor as “the most experienced and most qualified” to take the state to the next level.

  Unakalamba made the appeal after a court session in Imo State High Court, Owerri, Imo State on Wednesday.

Nigeria’s immediate past Ambassador to South Africa, Ambassador Ahmed Musa Ibeto, has said that one of his regrets in the past three years was defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the platform that brought him to political limelight, for the All Progressive Congress (APC).
Ibeto, who was the deputy to the former Governor of Niger State, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, however, promised not to truncate but to uphold the PDP’s zoning arrangements by serving for only one term if voted into office in 2019.

How APC won Bauchi South Senatorial bye-election

The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Lawal Yahaya Gumau, as the winner of the Bauchi South Senatorial Bye-election.
The Returning Officer for Bauchi South Bye-election, Prof Ahmed Sarki Fagam, announced the result at INEC headquarters in Bauchi on Sunday.
He disclosed that Yahaya polled total votes of 119,489 to defeat the candidate of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Ladan Saliu, who polled a total number of 50,256.

National Assembly won’t reconvene on Tuesday – Namdas

The National Assembly will not reconvene on Tuesday, contrary to the announcement made last week by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yusuf Lasun.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Publicity, Abdul-Razak Namdas, confirmed to Channels Television that the House would not be reconvening because there was no firm decision to that effect.

Namdas, who was a guest on Channels Television’s political programme Politics Today on Monday, said, “We are working towards resumption but not tomorrow (Tuesday) specifically.
