Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe has resigned, parliament speaker Jacob Mudenda says.

The surprise announcement came as lawmakers debated an impeachment motion against the 93-year-old leader in a joint sitting of parliament.

Mr Mugabe had previously refused to resign despite last week's military takeover, and days of protests against his rule.

Assistant Controller General of Customs in charge of Zone A, Aminu Dahiru, has charged officers under his watch to be vigilant to forestall attempts at smuggling arms and ammunition into the country.

The Nigerian Army Council has promoted 45 Brigadier Generals to the rank of Major General and 92 Colonels to the rank of Brigadier-General.

A statement by the Director of Public Relations, Nigerian Army, Brig. General Sani Usman, said the council approved the promotions Monday.
