Mourinho fears United has lined up Zidane as his replacement

Jose Mourinho is convinced that Zinedine Zidane has been approached to replace him at Old Trafford.

The Manchester United boss spoke to Zidane when the Frenchman contacted Mourinho to set the record straight over recent speculation.

Zidane was worried that Mourinho believed that he was orchestrating a move to replace him in the dugout at United.

But he told the Portuguese that his representatives had merely been sounded out over his thoughts of taking over at the club.

Instead of allaying Mourinho’s fears, it has left him believing that he is likely to be replaced by Zidane.

According to The Sun, Mourinho now has just a week to show the United hierarchy that he is the right man for the job.

He has two games – the first Tuesday’s Champions League visit of Valencia, and the game against Newcastle United on Saturday – to convince Ed Woodward to keep him on

Gary Neville tweeted implicit criticism of Woodward and the Glazer ownership when he stated that those above Mourinho were to blame for the problems since the departure of Alex Ferguson:

“It’s not the manager, it’s the lack of football leadership above him. They are bouncing all over the place with plan!”.
