Two arrested as police foil bank robbery in Lagos

Police in Lagos yesterday disclosed that they had arrested two suspects, who attempted to rob a bank located on the Ikotun-Isolo Road area of Ejigbo.
Detectives, who foiled the bank robbery, were drafted from Ejigbo Divisional Police Headquarters. The policemen were able to grab two members of the gang.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chike Oti, said that investigation was ongoing as the two suspects were assisting them to arrest the remaining two members of the gang.
According to a tricycle operator, who claimed to have witnessed the incident, a four-man robbery gang had planned to storm the Ikotun-Isolo Road, NNPC bus stop, Ejigbo area on Friday morning and attempted to rob a first generation bank.
The tricycle operator, who refused to give his name, said: “One of the robbers, to get access into the premises of the bank, approached one of the guards attached to the bank and tried to overpower him. One of the bank customers saw him and raised the alarm.
“Two of the robbers were in their Toyota Camry car, where they positioned themselves strategically, waiting to get signal to invade the bank. The bank customer, who raised the alarm, grabbed one who was trying to overpower the guard. A short gun was recovered from him, while his colleagues ran away.
Police officers attached to the bank didn’t allow mob to descend on the suspect. They called Ejigbo Police Station and policemen rushed to the scene and took the suspect away.”
According to Oti, it was only one suspect that was arrested, but he assisted the police in ensuring the arrest of another suspect.
Oti said that the Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, had assured residents of the state that they should not be afraid of doing their business with the banks.
His words: “The commissioner said that people should go about their lawful businesses because security in the bank and its environs is very tight. Not only banks, but other financial institutions in the state are secured.”
