The Chairperson of the Northern Governors Wives Forum (NGWF) and wife of Bauchi State Governor Hajiya Hadiza Mohammed Abubakar has reiterated the determination of the forum to fight illicit drug abuse in Northern Nigeria particularly among women and youth.

Hajia Abubakar made the assurance while flagging off drug control and intervention programme in Bauchi State sponsored by her office in collaboration with the State Ministry of Social Welfare, Youths and Sports.

She disclosed that the northern governors’ wives have made substance abuse their priority intervention projects.

“It’s unfortunate that illicit drug abuse is on the increase in the Northern part of the country and rampart among our women and youth and we are determined to win the war to ensure a brighter future for our youth as well as ensure that our women live a better life,” she assured.

According to her, among the steps taken to mitigate the menace in the region include establishing drug control committees, drug community volunteer scheme, skills acquisition centres and provision of a female rehabilitation wing in some states.

In his address, Governor Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi State represented by his Deputy, Audu Sule Katagum, commended the wife of the governor for the programme, lamenting that drug abuse has become worrisome in the society in view of its grave consequences such as youth delinquencies, crimes rate, violence, mental disorders and erosion of societal values.

He said, "It is important to make this clarion call and to caution them not to waste away their lives on drug and harmful substance, because no matter where you come from, you can always go to great height if the mind and the body are healthy ".

He thereby called on all stakeholders to join hands together with the government to address the menace and curb drugs abuse and trafficking illegal substances in the state.
