Niger State Correspondent of Daily Independent Newspapers Limited has been barred from Niger State Government House on the “orders from above’’.

No reason was given by the plain clothe security men at the main entrance gate to the Government House, Minna, for the new order, as the journalist was turned down while trying to deliver a letter from her head office to the governor’s office.

One of the security man simply told the correspondent:  “We are under directive not to allow you enter Government House so I can’t allow you in until we get counter order to that effect”.

The clampdown may not be unconnected with the report by Daily Independent on how the police and other security personnel allegedly rejected Sallah food and meat offered them in Kontagora because it was tasteless.

Gvernor Abubakar Sani Bello, was said not to be happy over the report The governor was also said to have come hard on his media managers.

Before the publication, the Reporter tried called the Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Malam Jibrin Baba Ndace, few hours after the incident happened but the number could not be reached.

She waited for the second day but both the Chief Press Secretary and the coordinator, Media Affairs to the Governor were not on seat when she visited their office in Government House to ascertain what exactly transpired in Kontagora.

Again she tried to call the Chief Press Secretary after inquiring from his office secretary about his whereabouts but the number kept ringing, ‘unreachable’.

The Reporter also called the former Deputy Chief Press Secretary who is now the Media Affairs coordinator, Mr. Jide Orintunsin, and he also confirmed not being in the office. He called back much later in the night to confirm that he was out of town a day before the report was published.
