Twenty-seven year old man, Usman Adamu, on Tuesday narrowly escaped being lynched by a mob at Dutsen Kura-Gwari, western by-pass, Minna, the Niger State capital.
He was alleged to have raped a three-year-old girl to coma.
Usman, according to eyewitness, had lured his victim, (names withheld) with N500 note to follow him to one of the uncompleted buildings within the area where he also promised to buy her eggs, bread and drinks.
The victim, who was said to have been sent by her mother to buy bread and egg from a nearby shop, was, however, intercepted by Usman, and taken to an uncompleted building where she was raped.
The victim’s cry from the buildings was said to have attracted passers-by and neighbours as they moved only to discover Usman struggling to cover the girl’s mouth before the mob invaded the scene.
The girl’s mother was quoted as saying, “She has been running errands for me. This is not the first time I am sending her to buy something. I gave her N500 to buy two eggs and a loaf of bread this morning from a shop nearby but she delayed in coming back.
“I went out to find out what was wrong only to hear her screaming and her scream I was told attracted neighbours who went for her rescue. I was called upon to the scene. My daughter is just three years old and this man raped her.”
A member of the RAYUWA Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) in Niger State, Dr. Musa Mashegu, confirmed to our correspondent: “The little girl was raped in an uncompleted building by Usman. As I am talking to you now the girl who bled profusely is still in the hospital.
“The girl had told us that she didn't know what the suspect was doing to her but that he promised to be buying her eggs and bread everyday and also give her N500 making it N1,000 that was in her possession as at the time of her rescue.
“Her mother had given her N500 to buy eggs and bread and the suspect gave her another N500. She told us that the suspect removed his trouser and also undressed her, but she started shouting when started feeling pain when Usman forced his manhood inside her”.
Mashegu, who said that the intervention of passers-by saved the suspected rapist from being lynched however refused to disclose the Police station where the suspect was taken to as at the time of this report but simply said, “We are investigating the matter but I assured you, the suspect will not go unpunished”.
