2019 AFCON: NFF approves two friendlies for Super Eagles

…plans to build 72 pitches across Nigeria

The executive board of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has approved two more friendly matches for the Super Eagles as part of build up to the forthcoming African Cup of Nations in Egypt.

According to a communiqué issued after the federation’s meeting staged on Monday in Asaba, the NFF also revealed plans to build 72 pitches (two in each states) across Nigeria – a move the body said was in line with the new thinking and focus of world football –governing body, FIFA with regards to laying less emphasis on building infrastructure and more on football pitches.
The meeting, which had all but one of NFF 16-member executive board in attendance, said the move to have the Super Eagles play two more friendly matches before the Nations Cup reiterates NFF’s earlier position that the country’s national teams would always compete favourably for honours at major championships rather than attending to make up the number.
The board also approved a proposal that the Super Falcons, should attend a tournament in Spain in the first week of April, and then take part in the WAFU Cup Tournament in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire in May, as part of preparations for the 8th FIFA Women’s World Cup in France this summer.
“It was also unanimously agreed that the team will have its final, pre-World Cup camp at the same Avita Resort in Bad Tatzmannsdorf that the Super Eagles made use of before flying to the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals in Russia,” part of the fourth of the seven-point communique read.
