The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared August 11, 2018 for the Bauchi South Senatorial Bye-Election.

Bauchi State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Ibrahim Abdullahi, disclosed this on Thursday during stakeholders’ meeting in Bauchi.

According to Abdullahi, the commission received a formal communication from the National Assembly on July 13, 2018, declaring vacancy in the Bauchi South Senatorial district by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

The INEC commissioner said that by the action of the Senate, based on section 76 sub-section 2 and section 25 sub-section 2 of the Electoral Act, INEC is mandated to conduct an election within 30 days after receiving the letter from National Assembly.

He said, “The election for the Bauchi South Senatorial district will involve seven local government areas of Alkaleri, Tafawa Balewa, Toro, Dass, Kirfi, Bauchi and Bogoro, constituting 75 wards. We also have 1,499 polling units and 445 voting points for the conduct of this election.

"To avoid any manipulation, INEC has made all the necessary arrangements to ensure the success of this election such as the use of card reader device, electronic transmission and collection, pasting of voters names in the presence of party agents and stakeholders at all the polling units.”

According to him, the continuous Voter Registration exercise which is due to terminate on August 17, 2018, will be extended to give opportunity for more people to register, adding that the registration days will include Saturday and Sunday.

Abdullahi, however, advised political parties and stakeholders to ensure that the election was void of violence, urging them to observe the principles of internal democracy.
