What we discussed with Buhari at Security Council Meeting – Defence minister

The National Security Council meeting began on Thursday with the general overview of the security situation in the country, as it relates to the conduct of the forthcoming 2019 general elections.

Minister of Defence, Brigadier General Mansur Dan-Ali (rtd), revealed this in a statement shortly after President Muhammadu Buhari presided over the meeting at the Presidential Villa.

He said it recommended the deployment of security agencies to the states, to enable the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conduct the elections peacefully.

Muslims, Christians clash in Kaduna

Several people were feared killed while scores of others were injured when Muslims and Christians clashed yesterday at Kasuwan Magani community in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The state government yesterday evening imposed a 24-hour curfew on Kasuwan Magani community. The clash was said to have started about 6p.m. A resident told our correspondent on the phone that a number of people were killed while houses were set ablaze.

NHIS board suspends Executive Secretary, Yusuf

The Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Prof. Usman Yusuf, has been suspended by the governing council of the NHIS indefinitely.

This is coming Eight months after being reinstated by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The chairperson of the NHIS governing council, Ifenne Enyanatu, read out the resolution of the council to journalists after a two-day closed door meeting at the head office of the NHIS in Abuja on Thursday.

Enyanatu said the council resolved to suspend Yusuf because it had received several petitions against the NHIS boss.

Gunmen again kill policeman, three others in Benue

Zaki-Biam, the commercial nerve centre of the people of Sankera in Ukum local government area of Benue state witnessed heavy tension as armed gunmen attacked Tse-Ajondo, mechanic site and Tse-Uvia in the town leaving a policeman and three others dead.

New Telegraph gathered that the gunmen also allegedly abducted another Mobile Policeman on special duty in the area and burnt down the police check point near the Zaki Biam mechanic village.

Supreme Court boosts oil revenue for Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Rivers

Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and Rivers States will receive more oil revenue from the federation following a landmark ruling by the Supreme Court Wednesday.

The states had approached the Supreme Court for the interpretation of Section 16(1) of the Deep Offshore and Inland Basin Production Sharing Contract Act in suit number SC964/2016, filed on their behalf by their lead Counsel, Mr. Lucius Nwosu, SAN.

The law mandates the federal government to adjust the shares of the revenue accruable to the federation whenever the price of crude oil exceeds 20 Dollars per barrel.

Nigerian govt, Labour disagree over new minimum wage

The Federal Government disagreed with the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) on Thursday over the new minimum wage demanded by workers in the country.

The disagreement was a result of the twist in the lingering controversy, as the government said it would implement the ‘no work no pay’ policy.

Director of Trade Union Services at the Ministry of Labour, Mrs Omabie Akpan, and NLC President, Mr Ayuba Wabba, spoke on the matter when they appeared on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television breakfast show.

The Lagos State House of Assembly has ordered the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state to call on the Private Sector Partnership (PSP) operators in their areas to go back to refuse packing job with immediate effect.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, who gave this directive on Thursday on behalf of the lawmakers during plenary also ordered the Clerk of the House, Mr. Azeez Sanni to invite the Commissioner for Environment, Hon.
